Plant Blindness Syndrome

2021, sound installation, drawings (dry plant fragments, speakers, charcoal drawings on the wall)
Solo exhibition at the Jedna Druga Gallery in Szczecin
A part of the curatorial cycle of Emilia Orzechowska titled Dark Side of the Sun (vol. 4)

The exhibition was inspired by different types of knowledge about plants. In traditional societies learning about plants was transmitted through joint practice embedded in a given place and people were involved in multi-species relationships. This engagement was accompanied by the sounds of tearing, crushing, cutting, squeaking, crunching and rustling.

Today we do not have the opportunity or time to observe the processes of plant growth and decomposition. They take place somewhere far beyond our world. However, plants accompany us constantly, whether they like it or not. Their "invisibility" has been called the plant blindness syndrome in the world of science. It refers to the fact that today we have stopped noticing trees, shrubs and herbs that occur in our surroundings. We learn plants not through collaborative practice, but through scientific discoveries made by teams of researchers. The dynamically transforming world is reflected in changing relationships with plants.

The exhibition was accompanied by a podcast prepared together with Piotr Pawlak. It is a kind of audio description for people experiencing the plant blindness syndrome: https://radiokapital.pl/shows/the-dark-side-of-the-sun/12581/
